GREEN VALLEY SIGN UP FOR WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS

For the convenience of Royal League members having a social round at Green Valley on a Wednesday and a Friday, we have had a sign up function on the web site. Unfortunately, a majority of non Royal League handicap holders and some Royal League handicap holders do not use the function and as a result it has become more of a hindrance than a help in avoiding five balls and letting players know who will or will not be attending on any given day. Given the sign up function is not being utilised as intended, we will discontinue the Green Valley sign up on the web site from Monday, July 6th.

JOHN ALMQUIST-FAIRWAYS+GREENS=2ND "LITTLE MAN" FOR 2009

John Almquist won his second "Little Man" for the year at Highlands on Thursday by applying that old golf truism. Hit fairways and greens and the score will look after itself. Fourteen fairways hit and ten greens reached in regulation were John's statistics on his way to a three shot victory.
Putting and getting up and down from the tight lies around the greens is one of the big challenges facing players attempting to record a score at Highlands. Especially for players like John who do not play the course a couple of times each week. John had his problems on the greens with three, three putts during the round but hitting ten greens in regulation meant nothing worse than a bogey on those holes and a better than even chance of par or birdie.
Offsetting John's three putts were two birdies. A chip in on the third and a nice fifteen foot putt on the thirteenth. Good ball striking all day got John over the wobbles on a couple of the middle holes on each nine but he kept his composure, trusted his swing and hit the next fairway and green to keep the round going.
Another player who does not play Highlands on a regular basis, Alex Stewart, took second place with a net 73 off his 21 handicap. Putting from short range was Alex's undoing as he left quite a few shots out on the golf course attempting to adjust to the speed and breaks on Highland's greens.
Kim Gillies took third place from a chasing pack of players returning net 75s.
Dennis Dobrick shot a 37 on the front nine to return an 80 and take the low gross of the day.
A good turn out played on an empty golf course in coolish weather made for a very enjoyable day of competition.
