Gary Close-The February "Little Man" is Mine A couple of months ago Gary Close was beaten out of his first "Little Man" on a count back. A cruel way to come up short. Jack Cooper took home the trophy that day. Gary got his revenge on Thursday, beating Jack by a stroke. Gary had a net of 66 and Jack a net of 67. Bloody good golf by both players on a course that does not normally give up scores of five and six under handicap. Gary was out in 40 and home in 42. Four double bogeys were also represented on the card against a lone birdie on the always difficult Par 4, 4th hole. The handicapper would have had a heart attack if Gary had limited the four doubles to bogeys and come in with a net of 62. Great golf from Jack to record the only sub 80 round of the day. Jack birdied the 8th hole which is some performance given the front left pin position on the hole. The most difficult hole on the course in my view when the pin is cut in that position. He backed it up with birdies on the 9th and 13th holes. Covers a multitude of sins when you roll in the birdies. Third place getter Steve Belair had the birdie habit as well recording two in the round. A beauty on the 12th hole were he hit one of those Lady Boy thingy clubs on his approach shot to 8 feet and sunk a lovely putt. On the Par 5, sixth hole, Steve took the break out of a 45 footer and literally ended up with a plugged ball an inch below the rim of the cup. Those two old warriors of the links, Ian Rudd and Kari Sirelius, showed what they were made of. Never pick up, never concede a putt. Ian doggedly completed the fourth in a record 15 strokes. Two sleeves of new balls, slightly damp, will be on sale at the course on Monday. Kari was like a metronome on the fifth as he counted his failed attempts to escape the green side bunker. One, Two,----- six, seven. Lousy chip, two putt. Give me a 12. If you do not love golf there is something wrong with you. Grahame
